Description

Let's quit fiction a little bit, time to draw a hero of my land. Let's wiki attack eh?
Antônio Filipe Camarão (born circa 1580/1601 - died in 1948), whose birthname was Poti or Potiguaçu, was a native brazilian of the Potiguar tribe and general of the luso-brazilian colonial army during the Dutch invasion of Brazil. Catholic educated by Jesuits, Filipe was fluent in his tribal language, portuguese and even a bit of Latin. The jesuit Manuel Calado described him as "(...) Had a very prudent manner and Very flattering in his words and very serious and punctual, as wants to be respected."
In 1630, when the dutch West Indies Company invaded brazilian northeast, Filipe Camarão imediately joined the resistance of Matias de Albuquerque. His expertise in native guerrilla tactics and fighting in brazilian terrain proved essential for delaying the enemy army advance.
Filipe always fought alongside his wife, Clara Camarão, one of the precursors of feminism in Brazil. The couple distinguished themselves in the battles of São Lourenço (1636) Porto Calvo (1637) and Mata Redonda (1638). He also took part in defending the city of Salvador, attacked by Maurice of Nassau.
His Last Battle was in 1648 when he commanded the right wing of the luso-brazilian army at the first battle of Guararapes, where 2000 soldiers of brazilian resistance fought against 5000 better armed dutch soldiers.
It was a massacre. According to wikipedia, the dutch army suffered at least 1000 casualities among wounded and KIA, in contrast to the brazilians who suffered 80 deaths and 400 wounded. The Eyewitness Diogo Lopes Santiago said that "(...) and as they ran away, our soldiers would follow them with their swords with cuts and slashes, cutting legs, arms, heads, some killing, others wounding badly, laying on the field bodies without arms, trunks without heads (...) holding their sword in the middle of those squadrons, piles of enemies, giving spokes to some and to others death, showing the sword, tinted in blood". Thanks to his skill in the battle, Filipe Camarão gained the honorific titles of "dom", knight of the Order of Christ, the "foro de fidalgo com brasão de armas" (i don't know how to translate that) and captain-mor of all natives in Brazil.
Filipe Camarão passed away in August 24, 1648 due to his wounds during the battle of Guararapes, six years before the Dutch forces capitulated. In 2012 he, along the other generals of brazilian forces during the war, had their names engraved to the Book of Steel, whose purpose is to record the names of the heroes of the country. The war against the dutch marked the first time where brazilians of all races would unite themselves to fight an common enemy with few help from Portugal, being the first nationalist spark of an independence that would come only in 1822.

Good story to go along with the drawing, I haven't learned much of Brazilian history, especially prior to the 20th century.
